Exhibition Poster:
Low-Income Housing Project, 2023. Designed for my 302 studio with Trevor Watson, this project addresses gentrification by creating transitional housing in a neighborhood undergoing rapid change. The site is located near key services, including mental health facilities, financial aid offices, and employment assistance centers, ensuring residents have access to resources essential for stability and growth. An envisioned extension of the trolley line would stop directly in front of the project, improving accessibility and fostering integration with the surrounding community.
The ground floor includes a cafeteria, storage, donation center, communal bathrooms, and housing for short-term residents. The second floor features single apartments for medium-term residents with communal bathrooms, a lounge, and a laundry area, while the top floor offers 1- and 3-bedroom apartments with private bathrooms for long-term residents. A central courtyard provides light and air circulation, complemented by transom windows for airflow, cooling, and privacy.
The structure is constructed from rammed earth and concrete, with a roof designed to capture rainwater efficiently. All collected water is filtered into an underground cistern, providing sustainable water use for the residents and offsetting city water demands. This project thoughtfully integrates site-specific needs with sustainable design to create a supportive, transitional housing community.
