Metal Shroud Desk Lamps, 2024. For my elective class On Light and Lighting with Claudia Kappl-Joy, I designed and fabricated these striking metal shroud desk lamps with the help of my brother Jake Tatham and close friend Jake Torres. After a visit to a local metal fabrication shop with Jake Torres, we explored various forms in the scrap bin until we identified a desirable lamp body. With Jake Tatham’s assistance, I welded the final design together.
The desk lamps feature two shroud materials, copper and brass, paired with complementary base materials of Baltic birch and dark oak. The operable metal shroud creates two distinct lighting conditions, shrouded and opened, allowing for dynamic light control. This project was an exciting exploration of material qualities and functional lighting design.
