Exhibition Board:
Adapted Neglect: Desertification and Democracy Studio, 2024. For the ARC 410 elective studio with Brendan Shea, Josh Stephan and I developed Adapted Neglect, a visionary carless communal co-housing project along Tucson’s bike paths. The project explored abandoned lots near the Rillito and Santa Cruz rivers, selecting two primary sites, Site X and Site Y, for detailed proposals. The goal was to create bike-accessible communities featuring earthcast domes for diverse populations, including unhoused individuals, artist residencies, and small families, with amenities like a cafe, bike shop, and lush desert gardens fostering community engagement.
For our exhibition, we collaborated on a diamond-shaped presentation board displaying the selected sites with diagrams explaining the earthcast dome construction, social organization per a U.S. Federal Grant, and programmatic details. The board incorporated a 3D render of the entire project alongside drawn graphics and plans. We intentionally removed text from the board to maintain visual purity, resembling a museum-style display. A QR code provided viewers access to detailed explanations, a 3D walkthrough of Site Y, and visualized daily life in the carless community.
The renders showcased the project’s vibrant communal atmosphere, highlighting shared spaces and sustainable design principles. Between the earthcast domes, lush desert gardens and green spaces enhance the project’s ecological and social impact. This collaborative effort combined art, architecture, and technology, making it one of the most comprehensive and rewarding school projects we’ve accomplished.
