Architectural Internship in Barcelona, 2024. During my internship with Taylormade Barcelona, I undertook the transformation of a dilapidated property at the exit of the historic Pasatge Sert, a bustling Gothic Quarter alley renowned for its vibrant shops, bakeries, and restaurants. The goal was to create a multi-functional space that celebrated the area’s cultural and artistic heritage while meeting the needs of both locals and tourists. The design featured a ground-floor café with indoor and outdoor seating, offering a welcoming environment for relaxation and connection. The middle floor was dedicated to showcasing emerging Barcelona artists, providing a platform for fresh talent to thrive. The top floor honored the legacy of Robert Llimós, a renowned sculptor and painter living nearby, through a gallery exclusively displaying his works. This arrangement reflected the Gothic Quarter’s dynamic blend of history and modern creativity, fostering community engagement and cultural exchange. This project was deeply informed by extensive neighborhood research, including discussions with local shop owners and studies of nearby cultural landmarks like the Palau de Música and the Arc de Triomf. These interactions enriched the project’s authenticity, ensuring it aligned with the needs and character of the area.
Working under Sarah Taylor’s mentorship was one of the most rewarding aspects of my internship. She guided me through every stage of the design process, emphasizing the importance of culturally responsive architecture and collaboration. Through site visits, I observed the intricate interactions between clients, architects, subcontractors, and laborers, gaining a comprehensive understanding of project management and construction coordination. Conducting these meetings in Spanish not only improved my language skills but also enhanced my ability to navigate cross-cultural professional environments. The experience of shadowing Sarah Taylor provided invaluable insights into Spanish building codes and construction methods, which differ significantly from those in the United States. These lessons, combined with the practical challenges of redeveloping a property in the heart of Barcelona, enriched my understanding of architecture as a discipline that bridges technical expertise, cultural awareness, and creative problem-solving. This project and internship remain a highlight of my architectural journey, inspiring me to approach future designs with the same level of care and sensitivity.
