Cosanti Foundry Apprenticeship, 2021. Apprenticing at Cosanti Originals was a deeply rewarding experience that taught me the complexities of artisanal craftsmanship and deepened my respect for the skill and dedication of my coworkers. I gained hands-on experience with specialized tooling and learned to operate machinery so old it felt unique to the space. Each bell required completing a precise and intricate series of steps to create a mold, with no room for error under tight time constraints. With the furnace only firing twice a day, any mistake meant repeating the entire process before the pouring window closed, adding a level of intensity and focus to the work.
Beyond the foundry, I took on a variety of tasks, including grinding, cleaning, shoveling, sand preparation, and mastering delicate techniques like forming metal loops with pliers—a skill that took months to perfect. I also learned to patina bells using hydrochloric acid and assisted coworkers during bronze pours outdoors in the Arizona summer heat, often exceeding 110°F.
Outside the foundry, I worked as a tour guide, sharing the history and craftsmanship of Cosanti with visitors. In the Windbell Gallery, I assisted customers and meticulously prepared bell parts, ensuring they were perfectly balanced before hanging. This apprenticeship was an incredible opportunity to challenge myself, refine my skills, and gain a deeper appreciation for the dedication and artistry behind every handcrafted piece.
